I have expertise in the leadership of academic staff development, facilitation and evaluation within learning and teaching in higher education. I am particularly interested in the nature of expertise in teaching, discipline-based ways of thinking and practising, linking teaching and research, and effective dissemination of educational projects. I have been involved in projects in a variety of subject areas as well as interdisciplinary and cross-institutional change initiatives.. I’m also a keen, but slow, trailrunner and play Bluegrass banjo.

I’ve been working in leadership roles in educational development since 1996, with a 3 year break as an independent consultant whilst based in the USA (2007-2010), including:
Manager: HEFCE-funded Earth Science Staff Development project (1996-2000)
Assistant Director: HEA Subject Centre for Geography, Earth & Environmental Sciences (2000-2007)
Senior Adviser: Higher Education Academy (2010-2011)
Head of Academic Staff Development: University of Bath (2011-2017)
Senior HE Policy Adviser: HEFCE (2017-2018)
Associate & Deputy Director of the Academic Practice Directorate: UWE Bristol (2018-2022)
